Cleaning the carpet at home is largely determined by the type of material and the length of the pile. It depends on the flooring characteristics, the rate and degree of pollution, as well as the choice of tool for cleaning.
It is believed that it is impossible to clean the carpet without a vacuum cleaner. However, this is not entirely true. Of course, the convenience and effectiveness of the use of the vacuum cleaner in everyday cleaning are indisputable. However, there are cases where the vacuum cleaner cannot be used for several reasons.
For example; if you are cleaning in a place where there is no vacuum cleaner if your baby is asleep and you do not want to wake him or her if your house has been cut off and so on. In these cases, there are other cleaning methods that will help to vacuum.
Vacuum cleaners can be loud and obnoxious tools as well as bulky and difficult to store. Even though they can be efficient, they are not the only way of cleaning. There are other ways that you can keep the carpets free from dirt and debris without having a vacuum cleaner.

This handy fixture can be purchased at the large hardware store or online stores. It is a flat container shaped dust collector about 20 cm wide. It has a round brush that touches the surface of the coating and sweeps dust particles and small debris to the dust collector. This brush has a long handle, so you do not have to kneel and bend deeply with such a brush. The container is easily accessible and easy to remove from accumulated dust.
The appliance is not only useful for cleaning the entire carpet but also if the contamination has a small area. This method is good for carpets that have long fibers. Because you can reach deeply into the grain of the carpet and pull out dirt that has trapped.
While purchasing, you should pick a brush which has stiffer bristles for short fiber carpets. You should keep in mind that soft synthetic bristles will not have enough tension or power in order to push dirt off. On the other hand, a brush with metal teeth is good for faux fur rugs or very fine carpets.
Picking up Surface Dirt
Even if there is a vacuum cleaner, still large chunks of dirt or trash needed to be picked up. Thus, you can start by picking up large pieces of debris by hand. For doing this, you need a small trash bag. Get a small trash bag and take the time in order to bend down and clean up before getting started with any deeper cleaning. This provides you to make your home look cleaner.
After that, you should shake the area rugs outside. If there are any area rugs or smaller, removable carpets, you can take them outside and shake. While doing this, you should be careful not to breathe in deeply since dust will be flying around.
If those methods are not working, you can try to use packaging tape in order to pick up hair and pet fur. You should roll out and cut a few inches of tape and press it to the carpet in order to pick up loose hair, fur, or dirt. When its stickiness is gone, you can discard of the tape strip and cut off a new piece. This method is time-consuming since tape strips are thin. On the other hand, it is an easy way to clean surfaces without doing a deep clean.
As an alternative way to use packaging tape, you can use lint rollers as well. You can break the carpet into sections in order to make cleaning less daunting and so you can keep track of where you have already cleaned. While cleaning the carpet without using a vacuum cleaner, you should not wear dirty clothes or shoes since you will be on the ground.
If you are not using a vacuum cleaner and want to clean your carpet, you should start by checking any labels or tags on your carpet. Because there could be specific instructions that you need to follow and it depends on what your carpet fibers made of. Not all materials can be treated the same way. For example, some rugs may need to be taken to a dry cleaner, on the other hand, some carpets can be soaked in vinegar without any consequence.
You should check around for egregious spots and stains that need to be dealt with before doing a comprehensive cleaning. If you are getting stains out before cleaning the entire carpet, it would be easier to do. And thus, you do not accidentally rub the stain deeper into the fibers. You should not rub stains, you have to blot them. Sometimes, there is only a need to use scissors in order to trim long fibers that have stating that simply will not come out.
For getting out stains contain bodily fluids such as blood or urine, it is best to use hydrogen peroxide. Commercial stain removers and cleaning products can be used in order to get rid of stains. While choosing these products, you should be careful about the chemicals in it. You should keep in mind that chemicals can ruin your carpet. So, be careful about that by double-checking its compatibility with the material of your carpet.
A plastic serrated knife can be used in order to scrape off gum and sticky substances. In other respect, you can put some dish detergents for grease and other difficult stains. This dish detergent is designed specifically for grease in a spray bottle and spray the stain until it is gone.
In addition, you can use a bucket of water and dishwashing soap. In order to make some bubbles, you should fill the bucket with water and put a few drops of soap in it. After that, you should wring out any excess, so you do not saturate the carpet. Because getting the carpet too wet will make it harder to dry.
If you do not want to use dish detergent, you can use natural home remedy instead. For a natural product, you should combine baking soda and vinegar. Then, sprinkle baking soda on parts of the carpet, spray enough vinegar in order to make it foamy, soap it up with paper towels as the last step.
The carpet should be scrubbed gently from side to side. Use a large sponge or scrub brush in order to scrub the dirt from your carpet. In order to make sure you get every inch of the area, you have to work across the carpet in sections. So, it is the best way to start against a wall or in a corner and work backward. With this way, you do not have to sit or kneel in wet areas that have been already cleaned.
You can prefer to use scrub brushes with a handle because it gives you better control. While cleaning large carpets, there should be several sponges on hand. So, you can change the sponge out when it becomes too dirty to be productive and to clean. While you scrub, you have to freshen the water frequently in order to avoid rubbing dirty water back into your carpet.
You may want to change the bucket in order to freshwater. When you are finished with the cleaning, you can rinse out the bucket and fill it with just water. Afterward, you should go back over the carpet again with a wet and freshwater towel in order to scrub out any extra dirt. But again, you should keep in mind do not oversaturate the carpet with moisture.
Furthermore, you can put your smaller rugs in a bathtub to wash them more thoroughly. For doing this, you should fill a bathtub with lukewarm water and mild dish soap. In order to break up any dirt in your rug, you should gently swish it around in the tub. Drain the tub and refill it a few times until to fully rinse everything.
Whichever method you have chosen, you should let it the newly cleaned carpet dry overnight. You can set up barriers by moving your furniture across the entryways that lead to the clean carpet. The powder can be used in order to cut odors with sprinkling. There are different types of powder that can be used such as pour baking soda, cornstarch, and flour. You should sprinkle them onto carpets and let them sit for 3o minutes to an hour. If carpets and rugs are shaken outside, this method will work best. The only thing that you keep in mind that long fibers will trap these powders along with dirt.
This method can be used to dry clean the carpet, however, it may be needed to use a vacuum cleaner in order to suck up the fine powders. If you do not want to use vacuum cleaner due to the noise, you can wait for a better time. If you do not have a vacuum cleaner, there still may be remnants left in carpet since the fine powders may escape a vacuum cleaner.
For dry cleaning, you should pick up any smaller debris with a carpet sweeper or by hand. Compare to by hand, obviously, sweepers are affordable tools that you can simply run across the carpet in order to help pick up dirt. There is no need to use electricity and sweepers are much quieter than vacuum cleaners. So, it provides you to clean anytime and anywhere. The only thing to do is running a sweeper across the carpets for quick crumb removal or dirty shoe trails.
It may be needed to replace brushes, that carpet sweepers have, periodically when they become filthy or too run down. If you are cleaning each room you may need to clean out the bristles as you go, because of the fact that they cannot handle the dirt capacity of a whole house. It is a necessity of empty of the sweeper regularly. So, you do not spread dirt around the house instead of cleaning the house.
You can sweep rugs and carpets with a broom instead of a vacuum cleaner. You can get an old-fashioned broom with natural stiff bristles. Dirt does not stick to the natural bristles as it does to a synthetic broom, so it leads them to be self-cleaning. While using it, you should sweep in the direction of a dustpan or a door that leads outside in order to help minimize the mess.
Using a stiffer broom requires forceful sweeping which can double as a workout, even though it forces dirt out of the carpet. You should be careful about sweeping because it may break off. So, you should simply add them to the pile of dirt you are going to throw out. It works best to use a broom for short fiber carpets.
Besides those, you can also beat the dirt out of the rugs and carpets. You can simply take them outside, if they are removable, and hang them over a railing or fence. A tennis racket, paddle or a sturdy stick can be used to beat the dirt and dust out. It is easier to beat the rug and carpet from a side angle rather than straight on.
For beating, you can use a garden hose to wash ant extra dirt out of the rugs and carpet, if there is no rain and it is sunny. So, let them air dry outside. However, you should keep in mind that sunlight can fade the color in fibers, so you have to be careful about the delicate materials.
