What Carpet Do I Need?

People who frequently redecorate their homes know the importance of carpet selection. In the same way, the curtains have a great power to change the general atmosphere of the room, but I can say that the use of carpets is an art.

While decorating the house, I recommend you to leave the carpet selection to the end. Now let’s look at what we should look for to choose the perfect carpet.

Table of Contents

How to Decide Which Carpet Do I Need

Which carpet do you need depends on how you want to use the carpet. If you want a carpet as a background item or a backdrop for the decoration of your home, you can choose carpets in cream, beige and earthy colors.

But on the contrary, if you want a carpet that is remarkable and which is the focal point of your home, then don’t hesitate to use burgundy, black, red and so on.

The carpet has a very important effect on the overall appearance of a room, so you must decide what kind of place you want before you decide to buy.

If your room is full of beautiful antiques, then it is appropriate to use a classic handmade carpet. One of the important factors in carpet selection is the area where the carpet will be placed and the colors around it. Color directly affects the ambiance in the room.

For example, light colors will create a wider environment than it normally is. As the selected colors become darker, the room looks smaller but warmer.

Carpets also have some acoustic values, because they absorb sounds and thus improve the quality of the environment in your home or office. Nowadays, due to the increasing vehicle and heavy machinery, we are experiencing noise pollution, in addition to the sounds generated from intercoms, faxes, computers, and air conditioners, we can easily see how important these acoustic features of the carpet when choosing a flooring.

Points to Take into Account When Choosing a Carpet

It is quite difficult to decide what carpet to use when decorating and buying furniture. It is up to you to choose a carpet with a special pattern to create a focal point in the room or a carpet that is compatible with the rest of the room. You can decide on the right carpet color by paying attention to the points such as the floor color, other colors in the room.

When you decide to buy a carpet, you will encounter a thousand kind of carpet in a colorful, modern or classical style. To make a preliminary selection, you can choose whether you want a plain or patterned carpet. A simple carpet for patterned furniture and a patterned carpet for simple furniture will be wise choices.

When choosing a carpet for a small room, it is worth noting that it should not make the room look more crowded, it should not stand out as much, and it should be plain and light colored. In large rooms, several pieces of colored or patterned carpets that match each other can be used.

If you don’t want the carpet to be the focal point and you want to draw attention to accessories or walls, then you may prefer a plain and light colored carpet.

Usually, in a living room dominated by neutral colors, a carpet color matches the color of the curtain or the color of the seating group may be preferred. You can use one of the white, cream, light beige or bone carpets to match your furniture or accessories.

If you feel that the living room looks more plain or uninspiring than you expect after the furnishings have been settled, you can use a self-styled, single-color carpet. Even if it is not colored, a textured, indistinct patterned carpet will add some action to the room.

How to Choose the Right Carpet

The decoration is the whole – part relationship. Sometimes you go through a piece you like very much, and sometimes you try to find parts of a place where you can imagine the whole.

Carpet selection is one of the important parts of the decoration. In the integrity of the ground and the wall relationship, choosing a carpet that features the furniture is the right decision. Of course, there are points I consider at the stage of preference as touch sensation, softness-hardness, color, texture, stain-keeping feature, size, and price.

The biggest misconception in carpet selection is usually the size. In accordance with personal tastes, carpet compatible with the place can be chosen. But the dimensions of the carpet should be determined from a professional point of view. For this purpose, I prefer the specially produced carpets and ordered carpets.

Choosing a carpet color is a very personal choice. You can choose any carpet from any color, pattern, and size. My suggestion is when buying a carpet; the choice should be made considering the color of the furniture and curtains in the room. İf you choose a carpet in the same tones, color integrity is achieved in the room and a satisfactory result can be obtained. You can add a new identity to the decoration with a different color selection.

Carpet texture should be similar to the fabrics in decoration. In a classic decoration, the silks may come to the forefront, but contry lovers should prefer wool and linen-like textures.

Quality handmade carpets are aesthetic products. In addition to preserving their values, they gain more value over time and have a better appearance than their first days. Cleaning and maintenance of these carpets are also very easy. These properties of handmade carpets make them much more valuable than other home furniture and add much more beauty to the room.

Carpet Material Selection

Fiber and yarn are the basic materials of the carpet. Soft, long, bendable, pull-resistant flexible materials are called fibers. The bond made from woven fibers of the weaving materials is called rope. The threads take the shape of the yarn after the processes such as cleaning, washing, bleaching, screening, dyeing, and spinning.

The type of yarn used and the production type of the carpet are some of the most important features that determine the quality of the carpet. In terms of individual consumers, the importance of material type in carpet selection consist of many factors to be considered like wear – tear, staining, static electricity transportation, color alternatives etc.

Natural Yarns

Wool

Wool fibers are the most expensive among others and are therefore only used in luxury carpets and piece carpets. Wool fibers are used in dense carpets and have been appreciated for creating a soft feeling. Wool is the most qualified fiber in carpet production and is a standard in the comparison of carpet fibers.

Wool fiber used in woven carpets, called 80/20 and containing 80% wool and 20% nylon, is the most preferred combination because it carries the durability of nylon and quality of the wool. It can be cleaned easily because it is resistant to staining. Wool has very good wear resistance and therefore it is durable and also flexible. It has a high resistance to flammability and does not produce static energy as well.

Silk

Silk, a luxurious fiber type, is often used in hand-woven carpets and rugs. It is produced by the silkworm. The silk cocoon fibers are turned into yarn and then can be used for weaving carpets.

Cotton

Cotton fibers are soft, but not resistant to deformation and staining. It is hard to clean because it absorbs moisture. In carpet production, cotton is generally used only for weft and warp. Sometimes it is mixed with different materials. For example, silk can be used for warp and cotton for weft. Thus weaving achieves tremendous strength and endurance.

Cotton is rarely used in hand-weaving. Because when cotton is used, the hairy upper part of the carpet cannot withstand wear and tear. Cotton wear in a short time. It becomes matt and worn. The extraordinary effort to weave the carpet manually is thus wasted. Cotton is mostly used in making carpets, however, it is easy to be stained even though it is a long lasting fiber. It is common to use in bath rugs due to its washability.

Animal Hair

Horse, cow and pig hairs are also used in carpet production. These fibers are often mixed with artificial silk and wool. These combinations increase the durability of the fiber and provide flammability as well as preventing contamination.

Jute

Jute is a dark brown plant and is usually used in the lower coating of carpets. It is sometimes used in the production of cord type carpets by mixing with artificial silk.

Coir

This fiber, which is used in small carpets and hall rugs, is derived from coconuts and its structure is similar to the sisal.

Goat Hair

Nomads often use goat hairs for weft and warp. The herds of goats follow them during the migration of nomadic tribes and it is quite natural for nomads to use only certain amounts of hairs of animals.

Goat hair is rarely used for hand weaving. Because it is very hard for hand weaving. However, there are exceptions to this issue. Angora goat is very valuable because of the high-quality Angora wool which is actually very suitable for weaving.

Metal Yarns

Metal yarns are used in synthetic carpets by mixing into the fiber to reduce the static load.

Synthetic Yarns

The majority of the carpets we use today are produced with synthetic fibers/yarns. There are 4 basic synthetic fibers as; Polyamide (Nylon), Polypropylene, Polyester, and Acrylic. These four kinds of synthetic yarns can be blended with each other as well as blended with wool to produce alternative yarn varieties.

Polyamide (Nylon)

Nylon, the most popular yarn type of our day, is a material that is resistant to wear, flexible, resistant to the weight and movement of the furniture and also provides eye-catching colors. It is suitable for all kinds of places independent of foot traffic level due to its structure which can hide the stain and dirt.

Among the synthetic fibers, the polyamide is mostly used by wall-to-wall carpet manufacturers and is preferred in commercial areas due to the fact that it protects its appearance in the best way and is the most successful fiber in stain-proofing.

Polypropylene

Although it is known for its easy cleanability, polypropylene (which is also known as olefin) has less resistance to oil-based staining than polyamide. Polypropylene can be used in both indoor and outdoor areas due to its moisture and mold resistance.

Polypropylene, which is much cheaper compared to the other three fibers, has more matte colors than other carpets due to its resistance to dyeing. Being anti-static is another advantage of polypropylene.

Polyester

This type of yarn, which has excellent color clarity, can be cleaned easily and is also very resistant to water-based stains, but its resistance to oil-based stains is much weaker than polyamide, as in polypropylene. Polyester is produced in the same way as Polyamide (Nylon), but it is below the Polyamide (Nylon) in the order of wear resistance.

Polyester is a non-flexible fiber, its hardness does not deteriorate when it gets wet. Polyester’s moisture absorption rate is much lower than other fiber types. For this reason, it is preferable to use in outdoor carpets.

Acrylic

Acrylic, which is a kind of fiber that can give the appearance and feel of wool with its structure, is highly resistant to molding and sunlight. The abrasion resistance of Acrylic is weaker than polyamide (nylon). The flammability resistance is also weaker compared to the wool fiber, which is very similar to its appearance.

It has a hydrophilic structure compared to polypropylene and polyester. Acrylic’s performance in stain proofing is lower compared to other types of fibers. However, it is more durable than polypropylene in terms of coloring.

Deciding on the Carpet Color

When choosing the color of the carpet, make sure that it is in harmony with the floor. If you want to emphasize the floor, you should prefer neutral and non-patterned colors. I recommend using the shades of gray to put furniture in the foreground. Due to the spotlights in the carpet showrooms, the colors of the carpets may look different on your floor, at home. Be sure to request a preliminary trial at home.

The pattern of the carpet plays an important role in hiding dirt. With large patterns, dirt and stains can be seen clearly, while irregular and multicolored patterns reduce the visibility of them. Carpets, especially in places where foot traffic is dense, should be resistant to many adverse effects such as abrasion, stain retention and color fading.

Color selection is made to create four different effects in the rooms. These effects are refreshment, hotness, coldness or warmth. In addition, the color chosen on the carpet should be based on how much you want to emphasize the floor.

Different Room Environments Created By Carpet Colors

I will give you some examples of environments created with the effect of colors:

Quiet and Peaceful Room

Colors: You should avoid large color contrasts for a peaceful environment. It is suitable for creating a calm environment when the shades of color on a monochrome carpet change from dark to light. It is wise to use dark colors on the ground because dark colors are compatible with gravity. Cold colors, ie green and blue is relaxing. Gray and darker colors also give peace. The reason why we feel peaceful when the evening is grayed up with the setting sun is because gray is softening every color.

Simplicity: The pattern always brings vividness, but that is not needed in a room where peace and comfort are targeted. If you still want a pattern on your carpet, I suggest you choose a small and hardly noticeable one.

Surface: Soft and flat floor carpets give comfort. As it gives comfort to the touch, such carpets also absorb noise.

Lively and Vivid Room

Colors: Bright, warm colors such as red, orange and yellow give energy to people like sunlight does. The use of high contrast colors leaves an exciting effect on the person. Contrasting colors such as red and green, blue and orange, pink and yellow increase the power and effect of each other when used together.

Pattern: Thick patterns are exciting. Thick patterns designed in contrast to each other attract attention. The more the pattern is used, the more the room will be full of life.

Surface: Hard and rough carpets give vividness to the room. Because rough floors reflect light in various directions. It consists of various light and shadow combinations. This variety creates a sense of vitality and movement.

Relaxing Room

Colors: The use of colors in the middle tones will give a feeling of comfort. A moderate contrast may be created between colors, but it should not be sharp. Bright colors or softened warm colors can be preferred.

Pattern: Linear patterns should be preferred. The patterns can be moderately contrasted. If the room appears to be boring, more patterns should be added. On the other hand, if the room looks much energetic, then the patterns should be removed.

Surface: Smooth or less rough carpet surfaces may be preferred.

Cheerful Room

Color: Light and warm colors are cheerful. Yellow, like the shining sun, gives joy to man. It adds brightness to the room without making it look narrower.

Pattern: Especially pleasant patterns add joy to the room.

Seductive Room

Color: According to this purpose, the room should be covered with warm colored carpet. The combination of dim light and warm colors creates a warm, cozy atmosphere full of friendship.

Surface: Thick, rough and sweet touches should be preferred. They play an important role in the atmosphere of the room.

Choosing the Carpet Pattern

The innovations in the carpet industry in recent years offer us much more than the alternatives in the traditional loop pile. We can make sure that we have a textured pattern on the carpet we have chosen to add a difference and attractiveness to a room. On the other hand, it should be kept in mind that the choice of a carpet with a cut-out pile velvety Saxony or a warm carpet like a Berber curl which adds a warm look to the room, helps to create different atmospheres.

The important point in choosing the texture and pattern is to choose the carpet that is compatible with your furniture and curtains, as in the selection of colors. Textured carpets produced with different manufacturing techniques may also have the ability to hide the stains on the carpet.

As a pattern, if you have a glamorous, crowded or very vibrant decoration with vibrant colors, then you should prefer minimal patterns with neutral tones on the carpet. Likewise, if we are talking about a minimal, under-furnished and simple living space, then the vibrant and lively carpets will create a perfect aesthetic.

If you will get a patterned carpet, you should consider the color of the flooring. If the color of the floor contrasts with the patterns, it will create a more elegant appearance.

Carpet Selection Based on the Area of Use

Before getting a carpet, you need to clarify some issues. In which room will you use the carpet? Is this a family-friendly area? Does the room have direct access from outside? Will the carpet be exposed to direct sunlight?

In areas with heavy foot traffic such as living rooms, corridors, and stairways, it is important to get the best quality carpet. When buying carpets, the performance classification guidelines of various brands should be examined. This classification system helps the consumer to find out which carpet can provide the best performance.

Living Room Carpets

Living room carpet decoration is a very important issue. The living room carpet should be carefully selected and carefully placed due to the special features of the room.

The first thing to consider when choosing a living room carpet is the location of the furniture. Yes, the layout of the furniture is the most important factor in determining the size of the living room carpet of your choice. If your living room is large and there is a space between your seating set and the wall, a large carpet should be selected and the seating set must be placed on the carpet.

If you have a small living room and you have positioned the sofa set on the edge of the wall, your carpet should not be placed under the seats. With this technique, your living room decoration will be more elegant and eye-catching.

If you have made a modern living room decoration, you cannot use classic carpets in this room. In this context, if you do not have enough information about the carpet style, you should get support from the sales representative.

If you are going to use a patchwork style carpet which is among the fashion carpet models of recent years, you should be careful about the color of the furniture. The color of the patchwork carpet should be selected as a vivid color. So the decoration will stand more stylish.

If you choose a classic style carpet for your living room decoration, you should use simple and light colored furniture. Classic styled carpet models are heavily patterned and very colorful, so the simple seats will look more elegant.

In the interior decoration, you may have adopted the dark color from the seats to the walls, from the floor to the accessories. In this case, choosing a simple and light colored carpet will allow you to achieve a pleasant contrast by taking the darkness of the living room.

The living room carpet of your choice except the ones mentioned above can be selected as a striped, animal leather look, round, asymmetrical pattern, pixel pattern or velvet carpet. You can choose your living room carpet by paying attention to the main criteria.

Children’s Room Carpets

When buying carpets for children’s rooms, you need to be a little more careful because the carpet plays an important role in the home and hence your child’s health and hygiene. If you have a baby at a young age, especially who plays crawling games on the carpet and takes a part of his/her time on the carpet, we recommend you to choose Teflon carpets even though it is a slightly more expensive carpet model compared to other options.

Carpets with yarns having low surface tension by a special method applied during their production prevent the penetration of dirt and dust particles. In other words, it is much easier to provide hygiene and cleaning in Teflon carpets. Because the dust and dirt that can be dangerous to your child’s health can be easily removed by everyday cleaning and never gets permanent. In addition, liquids spilled onto the Teflon carpets do not go deeper and easily cleaned.

Bedroom Carpets

The bedroom carpet should primarily be soft. These carpets, which we have stepped out of the bed, should have a structure giving us peace and warmth. Modern velvet carpets are quite good examples. Plush carpet models are thick and soft as well.

A bedroom carpet must close all areas on the floor. Carpets in modern home decorations are not as large as before. However, this does not apply to bedrooms. Even in houses with wooden parquet floors, carpets covering as much as possible should be used.

There should not be one piece of carpet. One of the most popular carpet models, which is called as wall-to-wall carpet, is a whole room carpet, that is definitely not suitable for the bedroom. Since the parts under the bed and at the edges will always be dirty and dusty, multiple-piece carpets should be used instead of one-piece carpets.

The modern bedroom carpets that can clean themselves and do not encapsulate bacteria are ideal for every home.

Light color carpet models are perfectly suited to bedrooms which is one of the cleanest sections of the house. White, cream color, pale pink or powdery color, are wonderful carpet colors for modern or classic bedroom decorations.

Kitchen Carpets

Lighter and more practical covers are often preferred in the kitchens. Because it is difficult to use large-sized carpets since kitchens are generally smaller than any other room. For this reason hall rugs, piece carpets and small carpets are more common in kitchens.

The most important point to consider when choosing a carpet for the kitchen should be whether the carpet matches the style and color composition of the kitchen. A modern carpet with colorful and geometric patterns will be the wrong choice for a classic kitchen with gold-plated decorations.

Beyond the style and color composition of kitchens, there are some other specific points to pay attention. For example, the decorative elements of the flooring in the kitchen should be seen as much as possible and a suitable carpet should be preferred.

On the other hand, the weight and anti-slip feature of the carpet should be taken into consideration according to the degree of slipiness of the kitchen floor. The physical use area and the shape of the kitchen are also among the important factors that will affect the carpet preference.

Small Room Carpets

When choosing a carpet for a small room, either you have to choose a wall-to-wall carpet model that have nearly no patterns and is minimal, or you should create a spacious and airy effect by choosing smaller models that do not extend to the lower parts of the seats and leave open spaces around themselves.

The carpets with a particularly moving pattern ending under your seating set make the room even smaller and have a suffocating effect. Also, if you design your small spaced room raising to light tones from darker tones, you can get a deeper and higher ceiling effect. In other words, you can have a more spacious environment by choosing your carpet in dark tones, the furniture with a little lighter color, the walls lighter than the furniture and a white ceiling.
