Can You Install the Carpet Yourself?

Although the carpet-installing process at home does not require special expertise, you may need a certain handicraft. Although the expertise on the subject does not make much difference in the quality of the flooring, it will most likely affect the installing time. In the studies to be carried out on a specific area, subject expertise can create a half-time difference.

The carpet installing process is carried out by following these steps:

Carpet Selection

You can start with the choice of the carpet in the colors and quality you want. Care should be taken to ensure that the selected carpet is non-flammable, thick and its base is made of felt. Thus, you can use the product for longer and more efficiently. Selecting products that are easy to clean is also highly recommended.

Measuring the Room Size

Measure the length and width of the rooms. Observe the wall bulges. Instead of working part pieces, you can buy a wall-to-wall carpet as a batch and use the increased pieces as a mat. Avoid attachments as much as possible. Wall-to-wall carpets are fitted with carpet adhesive or the carpet tape.

Preparation of the Floor

The floor must be dry, firm, clean and smooth. Clean the parquet care wax or old adhesive residues before starting to install your carpet.

Cutting the Carpet

The carpet is cut by adding 10 cm to the measures taken. It is recommended that you do this in a larger place, not in the area where the carpet is used. Thus, a more comfortable operation is provided.

Retouching

The cut part is brought to the area to be installed and the touches related to indentations and protrusions are finished. Thus, the carpet can be placed on the floor without having any trouble.

Installation with Carpet Tape

Remove the skirting boards before laying. If you do this carefully, you can reuse your skirting boards. Apply the carpet tape over the edge and across the center of the carpet with a few strips. Remove the protective layer from the tape and press down on the carpet. Pay attention to the pile direction of the carpet. This direction is indicated by an arrow behind the carpet. You can also understand the pile direction of the carpet by touching the surface.

Installation with Adhesives

You can use special carpet adhesives as well as contact adhesives (eg Pattex leather-rubber-wood, Pattex thin, Bison Kit, Derby, Bally). When gluing the carpet, fold or roll and cover the carpet with a roller on one end from the middle of the floor. Then fold the other half of the carpet onto the ground and apply adhesive to the other side. Before gluing the carpet, if the adhesive is a carpet adhesive wait for 15 minutes, but if it is a contact glue, wait for 5 minutes and lay the carpet onto the floor. Then, you can nail the skirting boards after the carpet is well placed.

Tacking Brackets

After laying the carpet, brackets are nailed. For this process, the bracket molds are fixed to the wall first, then the top covers are installed and the process is finished. After this, the carpeting process is finished as well.

Details of Wall to Wall Carpet Installation

If the carpet is to be installed by you or if there is no need for professional installing, then, first of all, you should plan the process. The direction of the carpet is determined according to the width and height of the room. The direction of the sweeping of the carpet is determined and the carpet is laid on the floor in such a way that the hairs can be removed when the carpet is swept through the door.

The edge is fully placed in the corners before the excess on the width and length side of the carpet is cut. For this purpose, the rear head of the knife is rubbed to the bottom corner of the wall until the edge angle of the wall is exposed and the angle of the carpet is 45 degrees. When it is the end of the ground, the wall climbing excess carpet is determined, and the cutting place is marked. Then the excess carpet is cut from the mark. If the skirting board is not attached to the bottom of the wall and it is to be installed, it is possible to make optional cuts under the skirting.

If there are curved skirtings such as herringbone at the edges of the rooms, then the skirting board should be dismantled before cutting and re-installed after finishing the installation. If you have a straight skirting model, it is not necessary to remove the skirting board.

In the door section, when the door is closed, the carpet is cut in a way that it can not be seen from the outside and glued to the floor. The endpoint of the installed carpet should be just below the door when it is closed.

The professional flooring master who makes the carpet installation is one who rarely sees the respect he deserves. Installing a floor carpet in a house requires a solid knowledge, skill, technical ability, and mastery. The most important tool to be used by the master who comes to your house is the carpet stretching machine in large areas!

If the master does not use a stretching machine, wrinkles may occur in your new carpet in less than 6 months. So, where the carpet stretching machine is required, especially in any room larger than 10×10 meters, the carpet should be stretched in order to prevent wrinkles. The stretching machine consists of long pipes connecting the two opposite walls.

The second most important tool that the professionals will use is their brain. Someone who is really a master of the business will be able to visualize the correct placement of your carpet and place the joints on your new carpet in the best possible way. Thanks to the experience of the flooring craftsman, he/she will ensure that all carpet is placed in the right direction.

Advance Preparation

It should be ensured that the area which will be covered from wall to wall, is empty and clean. You can do the following to make it easier for the person to perform the installation.

Remove the residue, plaster, paint, cement and concrete layers from the floor using a spatula or a similar tool. If there is another floor cover, sweep beneath it with a vacuum cleaner. Then wipe the floor with a damp cloth and make sure that the floor has a smooth surface.

Secure the electrical and telephone cables in a way that they cannot be damaged. Do not let the plant or curtains hang over the area where the carpet will be installed. Open windows and doors to ensure good ventilation.

Remember that carpet installing is the last step of flooring work. For this reason, first of all, you should finish and fix any modifications, painting, level differences, ground leveling, and repair works if it is needed.

Before Installing the Carpet

When the floor layer arrives, the following must be kept in mind:

First of all, make sure the carpet is the carpet you ordered after you see it in the store. Check the size, type, color code of the carpet. Ask your floor layer to check for any faults on the carpet.

Keep the label of the carpet, the warranty certificate, and a small piece of carpet. If you want to buy this same carpet again, it can be very useful.
If there is a remaining carpet, you may want to use it in the future as a doormat or for repair works.

Installing Process

After having delivered the product to be installed in the room, with the floor to be covered, leave the space to the expert. Check and receive the area after the completion of the work.

Some points to pay attention after finishing the work are as follows:

Some of the edge ropes of the carpet can deform in a few days. Do not pull those deformed strings, cut with sharp scissors or lightly close the end with lighters.

It is possible to partially raise the door by placing a stamp on the hinges of the doors which do not open or close easily. If the door is low, remove the door and reattach it after trimming the bottom of the door as needed.

Make sure that there are no wrinkles on the carpet after installation. If the carpet is not flat and tight, ask the floor layer to re-stretch the carpet.

How to Measure the Wall-To-Wall Carpet

The measurement of the floor where the carpet will be installed should be made by a professional. By this way, it is ensured that the surface of the floor is controlled, whether the leveling of the surface is smooth or not is checked, the lack of measurement due to an imbalance in the wall edges are prevented and correct evaluation of the product is ensured.

The four walls must be measured separately. The measurement taken in this way is the most appropriate. The possibility of any miscalculation will be eliminated. If possible, it would also be appropriate to give a 20 cm share to the size and height.

Wall-to-Wall Carpet Measurement Assesment

The flooring craftsman makes the plan according to the length and width of the carpet, in accordance with the dimensions of the area where the carpet will be installed, with the least amount of waste.

In order to get minimum wastage, the carpet to be installed is applied in a transverse or longitudinal laying method. The carpet quantity may be reduced by correct evaluation. The direction of the pattern on the floor, the aesthetic angle and the location of the joints (if there are any) are determined by the customer.

Carpet installing cost includes application, labor, bonding and transportation costs. After the measurement is taken, the amount of the product to be used with the planned application method and the unit price is being specified, the calculated amount is paid.

The floor where the flooring is to be made must be emptied by the customer. The surface must be flat and clean. There should be no objects such as furniture, cupboards, tables, seats on the floor.

The extra accessories to be used are added to the bill according to the demand. These may include:

  • Plastic plinth, Wooden plinth

  • Transition bar, plastic stair bracket, decor profiles
  • Aluminum stair profile, stair bracket, stair bottom bar

Carpet Installing Considerations

If you have decided to install a wall to wall carpet, you should have a specialist in the job. Because; wall-to-wall carpet flooring has fine details. Be sure to check whether the carpet you selected has the same serial number and color accuracy as the other rolls. Carpet rolls carried on the floor to be covered must never be folded.

The floor should be cleaned well, and it should be ensured that there are no residues of damp and chemical drugs. Because, moisture and chemical residues can cause the carpet to shrink and smell after a period of time, and the yarns to abrade. The craftsman should be well supervised so that there are no probable problems in the future.

A few points to be considered during installation are;

  • First of all, the measurement of the floor to be covered with carpet should be taken well.
  • When the carpet is cut according to the size taken, approximately 10 cm of excess parts should be left.
  • Firstly, a carpet pad should be laid under the carpet to be installed.
  • The carpet roll to be laid must be opened one day in advance. Otherwise, it can be folded up during installation.
  • The adhesive used to adhere the carpet to the floor should be selected from those that have no harmful health effects.
  • It should be ensured that the carpet models and patterns are joined together in order to complement each other at the joints.

  • Carpet should not be stretched too much with the stretching tool while installation. The carpets can be deformed from the joints and wall edges.
  • While the carpet is being glued, the skirting boards at the edges should be removed.
  • Sticking to the carpet should be prevented by placing laths on door entrances.
  • On floors having underfloor heating, felt stretching should be applied.

Wall to Wall Carpet Installation for Offices and Hotels

There are important details that should be included in the floor carpets for hotels and offices. Wall-to-wall carpets are manufactured using suitable materials according to the conditions of the environment which is to be covered with carpets. They should have certain features as non-flammable, antibacterial, non-staining, dielectric, not containing harmful organisms etc.

In hotels and offices, the first-day look of the carpets deteriorated over time. The most important feature of the ideal carpet to be selected for office use is that it should be one of the products that can resist the weariness of the years and keep the originality of the first day. Wool fibers have the ability to return to their original state when they are applied with pressure and released. Thus, after the weight and pressure on the carpet is removed, the carpet turns to its original state and does not keep any furniture trace.

If you prefer a wool carpet for a hotel or an office, it keeps its original color without any fading for many years. Wool carpet is very easy to clean, stain-free and maintenance-free. In fact, dirt and stain remain in the top layer of the carpet as it cannot enter the wool fiber. So wool carpet helps provide a healthy living space. In addition, it does not lead to an electric formation as synthetic carpets do. The wool carpet is ideal especially for hotels and offices heated from the floor.

How to Install Carpet on Stairs

Although the stairs in the house sometimes create a visual richness, this can have the opposite effect as a result of aging and wear. This problem can become even more noticeable when factors such as slippage and sound are added.

One of the best measures that can be taken in order to prevent slippage on the stairs, noise and the wearing of the stairs will be laying carpet on the stairs. It is an application that all of you can do easily.

It is necessary to make sure that the carpet to be used on stairs is a small and naive carpet. In this way, you can have a more spacious and visual perception. Carpet color, shape, pattern preference is up to your personal taste. However, the length, width, and structure of your staircase will also be decisive in your choice of carpet.

If your staircase is old, you must first upgrade it. If your preferred carpet covers the entire staircase, there is no need to do this. If there is a hole or a gap in the ground, these areas should be covered with plaster. Then paint the stair with undercoat. The reason for applying undercoat paint is to make the paint that you will use look more clearly.

After the primer has dried, you can apply the second paint. The second paint should match the color of the carpet you choose so that it visually satisfies you. For example, laying a red carpet with white stair paint will be good for color matching.

After painting, you can start the carpet laying process. If your preference is a thin and elegant carpet, you should assemble the carpet pieces one by one with a stapler. Don’t worry it will look like a whole when it’s united. Nobody will notice the staples. You can be sure of that.

Preparing the Floor

Tile carpets can be installed on any floor that is flat, dry, clean, solid, moisture free and without indentation. It can also be used on underfloor heating floors. In this case, however, the temperature should not exceed 20 ° C.

Tile carpets should be properly prepared and laid on tile floors after the necessary conditions have been met. To ensure a smooth, level and uniform laying, all slits, crack, and holes should be fixed. The floor must be smooth and should not protrude from anywhere.

The floor must be sound, clean, dry and free from any paint, grease/oil, dust, dirt or other foreign material residues that may prevent the carpet from sticking to the floor. If there are glue pieces left on the floor from the previous flooring procedure, they should be removed. However, attention should be paid when selecting the material to be used for removing old glue parts. Solvent-based removers that may cause problems when contacted with new glue should be avoided.

The new floor should be protected against stains, dirt, and paints. In this case, it is possible to prevent the carpet from being damaged by covering the newly finished areas with non-staining paper material and by tightening the edges of the paper with tape.

Installing Grass Carpets

First of all, it is very important that you prepare the area where you will lay the grass carpet. Experts recommend digging up the soil, cleaning rocks, plant roots and grasses. If the soil is very clayey, you can throw sand on top to loosen a little. If it is very sandy, adding some soil containing tree barks will strengthen it a little. Then you must squeeze the soil with a barrel-like tool. The soil should be left to rest for about two weeks. Make sure the soil remains moist so that it will continue to settle.

Now it’s time to lay the grass carpet. Before starting this process, we recommend that you put some fertilizer in the compressed soil. Then you can irrigate it and loosen the first layer of the soil slightly. Use a rake to mix the fertilizer into the soil.

Now you can start the installation. Spread the first row parallel to a straight edge. Subsequent rows should be placed above the other just like the roof tiles. You should always place the rows straight and do not leave too many spaces between them. If there is excess, cut it with a sharp knife.

Attention! The grass will be dry on the day the carpet is delivered. If you need to keep it, store it in a cool and shady place.

Now your grass carpet is ready for spring. To keep it green, its roots must penetrate into the soil. Passing over the new green area through the rollers ensures that the soil and roots are intertwined. It is also important to irrigate the newly laid grass carpet. Thus, the roots can absorb nutrients. It is recommended to irrigate each recommended square meter with 10 to 20 liters of water. About two weeks later, fresh grass becomes fully integrated into the soil. Now, you only need to irrigate your new grass carpet in warm and dry weathers.
