Which Services Do Carpet Liquidators Offer?

1. Carpet Binding

It is a trade in the flooring industry that involves modification to the edges of a carpet with fabric, adhesives, and stitching. In practice, binding protects the edge of the carpet from wear and from unraveling. There are the basic steps used to bind a carpet.

  • Cut the piece to be bound square or into the desired shape. It is being done to repair an existing carpet, trimming will need to be done so the carpet edge is smooth and straight.
  • Determine whether the carpet requires power beveling. Power beveling tapers the edge of the carpet prior to applying the binding so there is a smooth transition to the relatively thin binding. Thick carpets always require power beveling.
  • Choose the style of binding to be applied. Low-end goods typically have a polyester binding, high-end goods may have cotton, serging or sisal/wide border binding. The choice will be determined first by the type of carpet and secondly the aesthetic effect you wish to achieve.
  • Apply desired binding style using the appropriate materials and tools.
  • Stabilize the corners to prevent unraveling. Some carpet binders prefer to use staples instead of hot glue. Staples are quicker to install, but hot glue is less likely to loosen or cause problems later, especially if the carpet is exposed to moisture.

2. Carpet Padding Installation

The padding under carpeting can make a surprising difference in its feel and durability. It makes the carpeting feel richer and more luxurious, but is also practical, increasing insulation and comfort underfoot and reducing noise. It even makes vacuum cleaning more efficient! Most important, it is the support for the carpet, so a quality carpet must have quality padding. Without it, the backing on the carpet will break down more quickly, increasing pile compaction and pile height loss and speeding up the aging of the carpeting. For this reason, you should install padding that conforms to the recommendations given by the manufacturer of the type of carpeting you’ve purchased.

The type of padding required, and its thickness will differ based on the foot traffic in various rooms in your home. You will need thinner, firmer padding for family rooms, stairs, entries, halls, and other heavily-trafficked areas. Bedrooms, offices, and other areas with light or moderate traffic, meanwhile, can accommodate thicker and softer carpet pad.

3. Carpet Replacement

Heavy foot traffic, dirt, spills and more can diminish the quality of your carpet, especially if it is a lighter color. While vacuuming and deep cleaning may help, the only true way to restore the look of your carpet is to replace it. If your carpets are looking a little less than glamorous and you like to DIY, replacing your carpet could be the next project for you. It is certainly a project for experienced DIYers. If DIY carpet replacement is not right for you, contact a flooring professional for up to four free quotes from contractors in your area.

4. Floor Covering Installation

Floor covering is a term to generically describe any finish material applied over a floor structure to provide a walking surface. Floor covering refers more to loose-laid materials. Materials almost always classified as flooring include carpet, laminate, tile, and vinyl.

There are two primary forms of carpet installation. Tackless installation occurs when tack strip is installed around the perimeter of a room and the carpet is stretched over padding onto those tack strips to hold it in place. Before this installation method, the carpet was tacked down with staples throughout the installation which is why the new method is called tackless installation; as you no longer need nails in the middle of the floor. Direct glue down occurs when you spread special carpet adhesive over the substrate and then roll the carpet onto the glue to hold it in place.

5. Carpet Installation

There are 3 main carpet installation methods which are glue down carpet installation, stretch in carpet installation and cut-to-fit carpet installation.

There are two main types of glue down carpet installation. Carpet can be directly glued to the floor, or carpet can be glued to a pad that is itself glued to the floor. In the direct glue-down installation, the carpet is glued directly to the floor. Double glue down carpet installation is similar to direct glue-down installation, except that we first glue a pad to the floor and then glue the carpet to the pad. The pad for this type of installation cannot be any carpet pad, but a densified pad made specifically for this type of installation.

Stretch in carpet installation is the most popular installation method in homes. In this installation, strips of wood are nailed or sometimes glued to the floor around the edges of the room.

Cut-To-Fit carpet installation is not a bonafide installation. An installer will cut the carpet to fit a room exactly, but the carpet is not attached to the floor. The carpet is laid loosely over the floor. A cut-to-fit installation can be laid directly on the floor, or over a pad. If a pad is used, it should be a firm dense pad in order to minimize the possibility of buckles or ripples.

6. Carpet Removal

Over time, carpeting starts to show signs of wear and tear. This is especially true on stairs, hallways, and frequently visited rooms. It is recommended that old carpeting should be replaced every decade or so. Most of the people want to save a little money by removing old carpet ourselves instead of hiring help. Carpet removal sounds like a daunting task, but it can be done with a little work.

7. Carpet Restretching

It is the process of removing wrinkles, ripples, and bumps from carpet that has become loose over time. It can be done by pulling the carpet tightly with specialized tools.

Being water-resistant, vinyl flooring is a popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms but can be installed anywhere in the home. Vinyl flooring is soft underfoot, which makes it comfortable to walk on, is warmer to the touch compared to other hard surfaces and extremely pet-friendly, standing up to pets’ nails and messes better than most other floorings. Vinyl flooring is a versatile installation option as it is available in sheet, tile or plank form.

Area Rugs: They are a great way to show off your personality. They can be applied over any type of flooring, adding instant comfort and style. If something is missing in your room, you may consider adding an area rug. It is a wise investment that will provide years of enjoyment. If your walls are neutral, you may consider adding a bold rug. If your furniture is a solid color, you may consider a patterned area rug. On the other side, if your furniture is patterned and colored, you may consider a solid neutral rug.
